10 Healthy Snacks

A snack is a small portion of food eaten between meals. At times people tend to eat heavy foods in name of snacks which is too dangerous for health.

Healthy snacking is important as it boost energy between the meals and boost nutrition.

Every one should aim for three proper meals and two mid meals and mid meals should include

healthy, low calorie snacks.

Snacks are important for children too as snacks keep young children from getting hungry and becoming cranky, and they can keep older kids far from overeating at larger meals. And for picky eaters of all ages, snacks can be added insurance that they’re getting the necessary nutrients.

When it comes to snacking we snack on biscuits, chips, patties, pastries, fried stuff, etc. but we need to understand the importance of healthy snacking.

1) Soups


To satisfy the appetite for a longer period and without raising blood sugar we need to include high fibre food in our diet. Soups with lot of veggies ( without cream, butter and other fat) makes an excellent mid day snack for appetite control.


2) Fruits


Fruits are at top on the chart of healthy snack. Fruits gives us nutrition and are low in calories. Fruits give us fibre, vitamins and minerals and they are rich in antioxidants. High water based fruits are the best. Fruits are good for skin and heart too.


3) Nuts

Nuts alone or combined with raisins make a great high quality protein – fiber snack mix, to help your weight off. Nuts are high in protein, fibre, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, selenium and healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. Numerous studies have shown that walnut and almonds help in preventing heart disease.

Nuts are high in calories so it is advised to have a handful or 1 ounce of serving of nuts a day to boost energy.


4 Popcorn


Without the added salt, oil, butter popcorn is probably one of the best diet snacks available.

It is low in calories and cholesterol and high in fibre.

The electric hot air popper is the most efficient way to prepare popcorn .

Popcorn a can be mixed with peanuts, raisins.


5) Puffed rice

In India it is known as kurmura. It is used in many healthy roasted snacks. It has proteins and fibre in good amount. In India it is usually used in Bhel, nankeens, etc.


6) Low Fat Yogurt


Calcium rich yogurt keep bones strong and helps to fight off infection by boosting immune system. The live bacilli in yogurt helps to keep intestinal tract in tip top shape .


7) Salad Sandwich

Sandwich made up of 2 Brown bread or multi grain bread ( whole bread) slices with salad ( cabbage, lettuce,olives, cucumber, tomato, con, onions) filling is a great snacking choice. Salad sandwiches are low in calories, high in nutrition. You can add 1/2 slice of cheese ( optional).


8) Spinach corn Sandwich

Spinach is a great way to increase fibre folic acid, vitamin C and beta carotene intake.

Spinach has super healing powers, it contains antioxidants, potassium, magnesium, vitamin K, folic acid, lutein, zeaxanthin.

Clubbing boiled corn with cooked spinach purée and making a sandwich with it is a great snack.


9) Oats

10) Roasted channa, chickpeas

They are highly nutritious and forms a perfect snacks. Roasted channa contains proteins, fibre, calcium, potassium and magnesium. It is a healthy choice to satisfy food craving.
