Hailed with burning body fat, being high in omega-3s and charged with fibre, these little seeds can really fire up your metabolism.

What are they?

The seeds from the flax plant can be used whole or ground to make a meal or to create a vegetable oil known as flaxseed oil (or linseed oil). Flaxseed is one of the most concentrated plant sources of omega-3 fats. Flaxseeds contain 50 to 60 percent omega-3 fatty acids in the form of alpha-linolenic acid. Flaxseeds are also rich in antioxidants, B vitamins, dietary fiber, a group of phytoestrogens called lignans, protein and potassium.

Benefits of flax seed or linseeds-

1. Prevents Heart Disease Flaxseed is considered good for the heart because it contains omega 3. The other reason that it is good for the heart is flaxseed helps in lowering the blood pressure. Flaxseed also seems to make platelets, the blood cells involved in clotting, less sticky. Overall, flaxseed’s effects on cholesterol and blood clotting may lower the risk of “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis).

2. Lowers High Cholesterol Flaxseed oil is considered as good fats. It helps lower the High cholesterol which is dangerous for the heart. So to keep your heart healthy never miss to include one spoon of flaxseed oil or 2 spoons of grounded flaxseed in your diet.

3. Helps Weight Loss Flaxseed is a great diet addition because of its great benefits. One of the main reason to include flaxseed in your diet is that it helps in reducing fat from the body. Flaxseed increases the body's metabolism and secondly, the fiber in the grounded flax helps to get the body rid of fats. Flax along with proteins keep you fuller for a longer time which means it keeps you away from the food cravings.

4. Helps Prevent Diabetes and stabilize blood sugar levels Flax is a low glycemic food and won’t spike your blood sugars. The omega 3 and fiber also provide your body with good energy and nutrition for longer. When you can keep your blood sugar levels more stable, you have fewer spikes in your blood sugar levels, need less insulin, and help your diabetes… some people have reversed diabetes and/or been able to control it much better by eating flax.

5. Promotes Intestinal Health and prevents constipation  Flaxseed prevents constipation. Grounded flaxseed is more of fiber and secondly omega 3 and the mucilage fiber gently softens and clean the intestinal tract. The stool is then pushed out more easily through the body. The only thing to remember is that when taking 2 spoons oil flax, drink 2 big glasses of water.

6 Flax helps in diarrhea too-  Flax bulks up the stool as it has the quality to soak water. Thus it makes the stool hard. To get relief from diarrhea you can take1 spoon of ground flax with one glass of water.

7. Helps Decrease Inflammation The benefit of flaxseed on inflammation is due to the Omega 3 as well as the Lignans in flax -both are powerful in helping heal and decrease inflammation in the body. This is why flax helps with Arthritis, Allergies, Asthma, Sinusitis, etc.

8. Brain Booster- Omega 3 Flax is a Brain Food Flax obtains omefa3.   The omega-3 fatty acid known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important ingredient for optimal brain function Also, kids need Omega 3 so that their brains can develop properly. Omega 3  prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia as well as helps in dealing with Depression.  Omega 3 helps improving communication between the brain cells.

9. Decrease hot Flashes Flax has lignans in the hull of the seed and these are a natural plant source of estrogen. Women have had relief from hot flashes, night sweats and improved vaginal moisture without the side effects of Hormone Replacement Therapy -HRT. Many women have been able to completely get rid of their Hot Flashes with Lignans of Flaxseed.

10. Gives  Health skin The Omega 3 in flaxseed promotes healing of Eczema, Psoriasis, Dry skin, Acne, and other skin conditions. The Lignans are anti-inflammatory and help the body heal the skin inflammations.

The most common types are breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer. Studies have indicated that the omega 3 fatty acids found in flaxseed may inhibit tumor growth. The lignanas found in flaxseed help to protect specifically against breast cancer. It doe this by blocking enzymes that promote cancer and interfering with the growth of tumors. 12.
